It's funny how the simplest things can make such an impact. The Original Menu Planner (pictured above) from JOT it down has literally changed my life! I have been able to plan my meals for the week ahead of time, make my shopping list based on that plan, and subsequently have all the ingredients in the house for each recipe ("gasp"). Needless to say, my husband is thrilled! I'm ashamed to say that I think it's the first time in years that he's had an entire week of homecooked meals (shh... don't tell my mom). We put up our Christmas tree last weekend. We opted for a very tiny (maybe 3 feet tall), artificial, prelit tree. We always told ourselves that once we had children, we would definitely have a big, real Christmas tree. Well, having a toddler who either laughs or burst out crying when you tell him "NO" has quickly changed that thinking! So we proudly put our tiny, but charming tree on top of the dining room table where curious fingers can't reach. Maybe next year we'll be ready for that big tree... or maybe not!

Bursting Photo Books have been selling like hotcakes at VIX Emporium, a new West Philly shop of handmade goods. Unfortunately, this means that inventory is very low in my Etsy shop, B.Inspired Boutique. I just can't keep up with both venues AND a toddler! So, I'm regrettably putting B.Inspired Boutique on hold until after the holidays to focus on preparing for an exciting West Philly Handmade Holiday Shopping Party at VIX! Revealing the NEW Photo Book!!!

Just before Thanksgiving I sent some of my new Photo Books to a great new shop in Philly, Vix Emporium. They've sold quite a few in just the first week and have requested more already! I'm very pleased, but unfortunately that means my Etsy shop is at a bit of a standstill until I can catch up. So although I don't have any to list on Etsy yet, I am excited to reveal my new Photo Book Design! I will be phasing out the Bursting Photo Books and instead offering Starburst Photo Books. They hold lots more photos (22 total!) and can be displayed on a table or hanging in the shape of a star! My "baby" boy celebrated his very first Birthday today! I didn't realize just how emotional I would be. Sawyer had a rocky start, with a short stay in the NICU and immediate enrollment in Early Intervention. So his first Birthday has got me rethinking, reliving, all of those bittersweet moments. Sunday, I broke down crying at church during the sermon about gratitude. I keep coming back to just how grateful I am to have such a blessing, a wonderfully healthy son, in my life! A: Goodness I'm the one who need the tips! My 1st floor is wide open. We have a half wall that separates the kitchen/dinning room from our living room/great room. I have my sewing machine on our dinning room table (its easily moved when we have company) and I also work from my ironing board which is in the living room. Its easy this way so I can keep and eye on my littlest one and get my work done. I also work while she naps.

A Doodle a Day Keeps Boredom at Bay!

B.Inspired Boutique is really hoppin' this week. I just received an order last evening for 3 Bursting Photo Books to be used for Bridal and Baby Shower gifts. And I'm working on Bursting Photo Books for consignment in 3 different shops! I'm glad it's doing well, but I feel like I've kicked into production mode. I'm learning that I don't always like "production mode." It doesn't always feel very creative. So, I've created a little challenge to make sure I tap into that true creative energy each and everyday: Etsy Doodle. Yeah, I know. It sounds so corny, and it is! But I love it! It's a Flickr group geared toward Etsy Sellers (but welcoming to any doodler) that gives a daily theme for doodling. Then the "doodlers" can post pics or scans of their doodles to share. It's really cool to see how different artist interpret a theme! Here is one of today's doodles (from Those Greathouse Women) based around the theme "COUNTRY."

A New Kind of Home Jewelry Party...

I've always been a big fan of those Tupperware-style home parties. Back "home," my mother would just roll her eyes when I told her of the next home party she was to attend at my house or hers! However, I was never really fan of the traditional home decor parties (you know which ones I'm talking about); all of the items seemed to look the same: too "country," formal, and overpriced. Occassionally I get in a funk when creating my Bursting Brag Books. Even though I never make two exactly alike, it can feel a bit like an assembly line. But just when I start to get bored, I make a sale and get to personalize the cover! This is what truly makes each book one of a kind. And this is what keeps me motivated to continue creating. The Fun of Custom Creations!

I just had so much fun creating two custom keepsakes for one lovely customer on Etsy. What makes custom work so much fun is the connection that you build with the customer. It's so wonderful to learn the stories behind each purchase; who it's for, what that person's like, the special occasion that warrants such a treasure. I put a bit more time than usual into creating this custom banner, but it was easy to stay motivated thinking of the four-year-old, red-headed diva that would enjoy it so much at Christmas!

A: My mom, she is a very creative person too! As a child, she gave me simple things like paper, crayons, watercolors and glue and let me make all kinds of fun things, and always with lots of encouragement. When it came to elementary school and Girl Scout projects, she would get right in there and help me. Because of her example, I do that very same thing with my own two children!

Q: Any tips on juggling motherhood and a business?

A: God - first, Family - second, Business - third.

Everything always seems to fall right into place when I follow this rule! I won't say it is an easy rule to follow, because that third thing seems to takes on a life of it's own! So to remind myself of these important priorities, I've put a post-it note on the bottom of the computer screen so I can see it every time I sit down! That way I can't forget! :)

EtsyMoms Work Hard Treasury

It's been wonderful being a member of the Etsy community for the past 10 days. I have had the opportunity to meet a hugely diverse group of people who all have at least one thing in common: creative energy! They have been very welcoming and endlessly helpful. What's in a Name?

Everyone knows that a business' name is very important. Arguably the most important part of a business. So I put alot of thought into mine. I spent a great amount of time brainstorming names, but I just kept coming back to B.Inspired; It just felt right. First, I knew that I wanted my products to be personalized to each customer's inspirations, just like my own personal creations are customized to my inspirations, usually my son. I wanted my customer to feel "inspired." Next, I chose to use the initial "B" instead of the word "Be" because my last name starts with "B." Most of my creations can be personalized with a customer's initial(s), so the "B." symbolizes that as well. Once I had chosen my business name, I knew immediately that I must have a bee in my logo, for my son's lovey is a bee! Seeing the name "B.Inspired Boutique" fills me with wonderful emotion and excitement! And even more so now, seeing it in my new beautiful banner (courtesy of Rio Oso Designs)!

Welcome to Over-Inspired Anonymous

Maybe I should start a support group: Over-Inspired Anonymous. I have so many exciting ideas for new creations buzzing around in my brain, and yet I still seem to just spend more time coming up with more ideas! Barnes and Noble is near the top of my list of favorite places (right below The Flower and Craft Warehouse) to spend time adding to my endless cache of creative ideas. I could sit infront of the section of craft books and magazines for hours. (The operative word there being "could," since Sawyer allows only limited lengths of time between stroller movements.) The entire time, my brain is firing, "Oooh...ahhh.... Oh I can do that! Oh that's what I should create next. No, no; I really just want to do some hand-embroidery. Oh, but check out this book on Artist Trading Cards!!! I'm going to buy this. And then I'm going to decoupage everything! No, I'm going to buy this... No..." And on, and on, and on, until I feel drunk and exhausted with creative inspiration!

This time however, I resisted buying any books or magazines on new creative techniques. Instead I left the book store (2 hours later and with a bored and cranky son) with "Craft, Inc.: Turn Your Creative Hobby Into a Business," by Meg Mateo Ilasco. You see, unlike my creative projects and working online, reading is something I can do while still being an arm's reach of my clingy son while he plays. So I zipped through the first 3 chapters this morning, and I can assure you: This is NOT your traditional craft business book! This is a craft business book pulsing an indie vibe; from the interviews of indie artists sprinkled throughout right down to the retro olive and blue color scheme. I'm so excited about this book and what it can do for me. I think I've found my support group! Over the next couple of weeks (even though it shouldn't take that long to read), I will share what I learn and reflect on the business aspect of my creativity.

Places that Inspire

It takes awhile to really get to know a city. We moved to the Reading area three months ago and I still have to get out my trusty city map at least once a week. Now you must keep in mind that we moved from a town with only two traffic lights (one being for the entrance of Walmart). But it didn't take me long to discover the best art and craft supply store I have ever been to! You know that was my first priority - right before the bank, the grocery store, and Barnes and Noble.

The Flower and Craft Warehouse (in Blue Ball, PA) doesn't have a flashy name, a brilliant exterior, or even a sign (that I saw) from the highway. In fact I was skeptical upon approach; but once inside, I was in awe of the selection and quality of products. The huge store is broken up into many sections, such as floral, crafts, and fine art supplies. I was surprised to see that it even went beyond arts and crafts, including sections for candles, party supplies, a green house, and an entire second floor of inspiring home decor! But my favorite section, and the one that I drive over 30 minutes for, is the scrapbooking section. It surpasses any Michaels or A.C. Moore,

with at least five times the selection of decorative paper and better prices,

too. Here are a few of my favorites from today's (rather large) purchase. I can't wait to start creating with them!

By the way, a huge "Thank You" to Paper Shop ink for featuring my Explosion Photo Books on their blog today It was a nice surprise upon my return from my paper shopping adventure!

Changing Inspirations

It's funny how life changes. The biggest change of all has been becoming a mom; and more recently becoming a stay at home mom. My creative life has changed as well. As an artist in college, I found inspiration through studying ancient art, reading feminist literature, and even travelling with girlfriends to New Mexico for Meinrad Craighead's Women's Creative Retreat. Then my creative work included hours upon hours of researching ancient feminine symbolism, planning and sketching, and finally bringing emotionally charged images to life through righ and colorful oil paint. Now I find myself enthralled with watching my son learn how to stick out his tongue, reading Goodnight Moon over and over again, and going to our weekly playdate to Gymboree. Now my creative work consists of grabbing a few minutes here and there, between diaper changes, bottles, reading Goodnight Moon (again...), and playdates at Gymboree, to make something to capture all of these precious memories of my son's baby years. Sometimes I miss that earlier version of myself, but mostly I'm just glad I had those experiences that make me the person, the mother, that I am today.

It's Official! I'm an Etsy Seller!

I listed my first items for sale on Etsy today! I'm officially an Etsy Seller. Well... maybe not. I guess it depends on whether you have to actually have made a sale to be a seller. Anyway, I have listings! And I'm so excited! I have lots more to list, but I am spreading them out.

First, I listed a Custom Photo Crazy Quilt, using my very own wedding quilt as an example. We had a very relaxed country-themed wedding with denim bridesmaid dresses, a sunflower-lined aisle, and an antique John Deere tractor hay ride. It was wonderful! And seeing this quilt everyday takes me back to that once-in-a-lifetime feeling. Not only does it include photos, it also has fabrics that we used to decorate and that symbolize aspects of our wedding. I finished it off with tons of hand-embroidery and button and bead embellishments.
This quilt is so special to me; It would be such an honor to create such a special family heirloom for someone else. That's what I love about custom orders. You really get to make a special connection with your buyer. I can't wait for that first sale! Then I guess I will be an Official Official Etsy Seller!
